Teaching vacancies in central universities to be filled in 6-8 months: Dharmendra Pradhan

Recruitment for all vacant teaching positions in central universities will be filled within 6 to 8 months, assured Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan. “A special recruitment process is underway. The filling of all vacancies in all central universities will be completed in 6-8 months,” Pradhan said in a written response to Rajya Sabha.

The education minister said 6,558 teaching posts and 15,227 non-teaching posts are vacant. Over 4,000 teaching positions have already been advertised for recruitment.

Many MPs have raised the issue of vacancies in educational institutions.

Biju Janata Dal Rajya Sabha member Sujeet Kumar has expressed concern over the large number of teaching vacancies at the Central University of Odisha in Koraput. At this university, 137 of the 154 sanctioned teaching positions are vacant. Kumar said that according to the October 2021 report by the Ministry of Education, 89% of teaching positions at Central Odisha University are vacant.

“It is not a private institute or an ordinary college. It is Odisha Central University in Koraput,” the BJD MP said. He said there is no full-time vice-chancellor at the university.

The university has 14 regular departments and only 17 permanent teachers, which equates to about one teacher per department for a student body of 950, Kumar added.

Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, MP for Koraput, said he has repeatedly highlighted this issue in the Lok Sabha. He went on to add that vacancies in central universities will impact the quality of teaching and research activities of the university. He stressed that visiting professor appointments are not the answer to large-scale vacancies.
