Utah universities rank among the best nationally


UTAH (ABC4) – Furthering your education and earning a degree is a gateway to many career opportunities. For many, earning an undergraduate degree is the next step after graduating from high school.

Finding the perfect university to earn an undergraduate degree can be an overwhelming decision. American News hopes to ease the pressure with its national ranking of institutions across the United States. Using 17 measures of academic quality, US News determined which schools offer the best value, have the best financial and faculty resources, and have the best graduation and retention rates.

With so many high-quality universities across the country, let’s see where schools in Utah rank nationally.

Brigham Young University

The Provo-based university tops the list of schools in Utah. Ranked at No. 89 nationally (tied with seven other universities), BYU is the highest-ranked national university in Utah, according to US News, with a 62 out of 100. The Cougars also ranked high in value , ranking No. 11 nationally for best value.

BYU particularly excelled with its accounting program. According to the US News list, BYU’s accounting program ranked third nationally, behind only the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

University of Utah

With a score of 60 out of 100, the University of Utah is tied with nine other universities at No. 105 in the national ranking. The U of U is the second highest institution based in Utah. The Utes also ranked well in public schools, breaking the top 50 list at No. 48 and being named No. 67 for Best Colleges for Veterans.

Most notably, however, the U of U ranked #5 nationally and #2 among public schools for its entrepreneurship program.

“We have a deep tradition of entrepreneurship at Eccles School, and we continue to build on that heritage by giving our students the best possible opportunities to learn what it takes to be an entrepreneur,” said Rachel Hayes, Dean from David Eccles School. work. “We teach our students to be actors. We challenge them all to launch a product or company, or join one, and then we give them the information and resources to do so.

Utah State University

Utah State University ranked lowest in the Utah National Schools Rankings at #250, however, the home of the Aggies ranked #124 in top public schools. US News gave the Logan-based university a score of 46 out of 100, citing a student-faculty ratio of 22:1 and 50.9% of classes of 20 or fewer students.

According to US News, USU has a 93% acceptance rate, with its students outnumbering teachers 22:1. USU graduates reportedly earn a median starting salary of $51,600.

University of Westminster


The University of Westminster reported incredible improvement from last year’s US News rankings. Westminster beat BYU in best value, ranking fifth in the nation, moving up 14 spots from the 2022 ranking. Westminster also had its ranking approved as a regional college, moving up six spots to take the 12th best spot. in the western region.

Overall, Westminster scored 80 out of 100, a particularly high score with faculty resources. According to US News, the private Salt Lake-based university has a student-teacher ratio of 8:1 with 82.9% of classes having less than 20 students.

Weber State University

Weber State University in Ogden topped the ranking of regional schools and public institutions. The home of the Wildcats tied for 32nd in the best public schools, overtaking the University of Utah. WSU also ranked among the top 100 regional universities in the West alongside Westminster, ranking 64th.

While overall Weber State earned a US News score of 42 out of 100, the college, however, posted a 100% acceptance rate for the fall 2021 semester.
